Youth Camp 2008! (#1)

The verdict is in: camp was a great success! There is a lot to say about camp, so we will be writing a little series of blog posts about it.

Here's the quick overview:
--Camp is held on the dates of the Brazilian "Carnival" celebration (it's one of Brazil's biggest and most high-profile holidays. Like our own Mardi Gras, it's basically an excuse to make total indulgence in heavy drinking and sex okay.) It ran from Friday night to this past Tuesday.

--The theme this year comes from a well-known rockin' worship song here: "Santo, Eu Quero Ser Santo!" which means "Holy, I want to be holy!"

--The leadership in charge thought there may be only around 100 teens in attendance (because camp has been rather purposeless and 'lame' the past couple of years). BUT THERE WERE NEARLY 200 YOUTH THAT CAME!

--Every day, camp consisted of:
-cabin devotions, discussion in the early AM
-two morning sessions of teaching/Bible study (which we were in charge of),
-team games (also in charge of),
-three meals (Brazilian camp food = not bad!),
-free time where the kids played volleyball, soccer (futbol), swam, went down the 'zip- line', threw around the american football, or played guitars, dominos or just hung out.
-nightly session with preaching, music, etc.
-"afterglow" activities: "social"(the closest thing we have in the states is square-dancing)
talent night, Bible-smuggling game, testimony night

--we don't know any numbers yet, and we didn't attend every nightly session, but we witnessed several teens make deeper commitments to the LORD! We are excited to hear back from the district leaders and find out more stories of lives that were impacted.
